The University of North Carolina was chartered by the state's General Assembly in 1789. Its first student was admitted in 1795. Elmer D. Johnson attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., from 1932 to 1951, receiving a BA (1936), MA (1942), and PhD (1951) all in history. Johnson did not take the images contained in this collection, but received them in 1942 from an unidentified fellow student who was leaving UNC to serve in World War II.
